When it comes to replacing the windows in your home, you want to be sure that you’re getting the best quality within your budget. We’re proud to carry Milgard products, which are manufactured right here in Oregon. Milgard has developed their own vinyl window products and have done development on their own fiberglass for window frames, which was somewhat of a ground breaker in the industry.

These are beautiful products and they come with a lifetime warranty. They’re lightweight, but incredibly strong which means they can hold up under the pressure of high winds and rains, which is pretty common in some of the seasons across the Pacific Northwest. Milgard’s wood windows are actually fiberglass with a wooden cladding, so if you love the look of wood but don’t want the maintenance and other issues that come with it, this is a great option! The Milgard Essence series are one of our most popular sellers, as they look like an older window, but have all of the new, energy efficient features.

In addition, Milgard has crafted their own vinyl that provides homeowners with durability and strength that will last for the lifetime of their home. Not only are they incredibly made, they are very affordable, especially once you understand that you will save significant money in energy over the years. We’re proud to carry the Montecito, Quietline, Styleline, and Tuscany lines, with Tuscany being our most popular product in the vinyl category.

When you choose a Milgard product, you are not only supporting a local company, but you know you’re getting the best of the best. Not sure which product is right for your home and your budget? We’re happy to help! We serve Portland, Oregon, and the surrounding areas, as well as Bend and Central Oregon. Top 5 Door Styles

0
0

The front door of your home plays a big part in your home’s curb appeal. In fact, it’s usually one of focal points of your house and one of the first things that people notice when they first drive up. That’s why if your front door is starting to look like it’s had some better days, you should consider replacing it. Here are some important reasons why you should replace your door and some of the top door styles that we sell and can install into your Bend or Portland home.

Reasons why you should replace your old door:

#1: Energy efficiency.
The entry area of your home is one of the biggest openings in your home. Valuable energy can escape out of the space and the interior of your home will let the outside elements inside. If your front door is drafty and air is leaking in or out, you may not only have an uncomfortable temperature in your home, but you will likely have higher energy bills.

#2: Safety.
When you have an old or dilapidated door, it makes it a lot easier for intruders to break into your home, simply because they are simpler to break down. Replacing your door with one that is strong and reliable is an important part of keeping your home safe and secure.

#3: Increased property value.
A new door will not only make your home more beautiful, but it can also help increase the value of your property.

Which doors should you choose?
Here are some of the most popular doors that we sell.

Simpson Craftsman Two Panel
Simpson Craftsman Three Panel

These gorgeous all-wood doors make a beautiful addition to any home. They are most popular for entryway doors.

Thermatru Fiberglass Doors
Fiberglass doors are not only beautifully made, but they are energy efficient, very secure, and are a great alternative to wood or steel doors. These doors come in a variety of styles and stains to match whatever your design preference is.

For French doors, back patio doors, and sliding glass doors we are proud to sell Milgard or Simonton (fiberglass/wood interior) brands. Our most popular selling line is the Milgard Tuscany for vinyl for sliding glass doors.

Not sure which door is right for your home and your budget? We’re happy to come out and measure the space and provide some options that fit with your home’s style and budget. We serve Portland, Oregon, and the surrounding areas, as well as Bend and Central Oregon. Our team of professionals will help you get your home looking beautiful! Contact us today if you need expert advice on door repair or door replacement, as well as weatherization tips.

The Roofing Process: What Can You Expect?

Your roof is a critical part of your home. It keeps you safe, protected, and away from the variety of elements that occur in the unique weather systems of the Pacific Northwest.  When you’ve decided that it’s time to replace your roof, the whole process may be new and a bit overwhelming for you. Here, we’ve outlined the process – from start to finish.

Step #1:  Planning.
This is the phase where you will meet with our team of specialists to go over the job and what materials are needed. Then, once the materials are delivered, there will be tarps and other barriers put up to keep your home protected during the installation process.

Step #2: Removing the old roof.
Here, our team will tear off the old roof and get rid of the materials. This can be a messy and time consuming process depending on the age of the roof, and it requires close attention to detail. During roof tear offs, we can look closely for any leaks or issues around dormers that you may not even know about and change out the rotted spots. In addition, in spots like eaves, sidewalls, chimneys, or valleys, we can look closely and make sure that no new flashing or ventilation to be added or updated.

Step #3: Installing underlayment and shingles.
Once the old roof is torn, our crew can start installing drip edges and underlayment. This will add an extra layer of protection between your home and the outside weather elements. It also provides space for your shingles to lay flat and neat. Next, shingle installation will happen and the amount of time on installation will vary on this. On a simple roof, we can install new shingles in a day, but if you have a larger or more complex roof to work with, it may take a little bit longer, especially if the weather is wet, windy, or extremely hot. We’ll communicate with you throughout the process and make sure that your roof is done well and within the specified time frame. When we’re done, we’ll clean up and allow you to inspect the roof. Now, you’ll have a beautiful new roof that will keep you protected throughout the year.

Don’t neglect your roof! Our experienced team has the expertise and know-how that is needed to recognize the signs that you need a roof replacement before you might recognize them and if that’s the case, you need to take care of it quickly. We love serving Portland, Bend and Central Oregon area customers! Contact us today if you need expert advice on your roof.

Your front door is one of the first impressions that your home will make with your guests and passersby on the street. Curb appeal is based on a variety of factors such as landscaping, siding, lighting, and the front entry way, and having a quality door is important.

A high quality door can last for decades if it’s taken care of, but at some point, you’ll need to ask yourself it it’s time for an updated front door or entryway. Here are some crucial questions to ask yourself if you’re unsure if now is the right time to replace your front door.

  • Does the door show signs of weathering?
  • Is it scratched or dented?
  • Is it hard to lock or unlock?
  • Are there cracks or breaks in the door that allow wind to get inside or leak out?
  • Does it hang level?
  • Is it difficult to open or close the door?

If you answered one or more of these questions, then it is probably time to consider updating your current entryway area and front door. There are a variety of advantages of putting a new door in which include enhanced security, ease of operation, increased energy efficiency, and an updated look.  This is one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can do to your home and you’ll really get a good return on your investment – your home will look better and it will be safer and more energy efficient, which in the end, saves you significant time and money down the road.

Things To Look For When Hiring A Company to Replace Your Roof

0
0

Is it time to replace your roof? This is a big job that many homeowners do not want to take on themselves, so now it comes time to doing the research of which companies are reputable and which ones are not. While doing your research, there is certain information and specific questions to ask before you sign a contract or hand over any money. Asking questions is a helpful way to find out exactly what you need to know and it shows that you care about your home and want the best job done. Here are some helpful questions to ask potential roofers:

Question #1: Business name and physical address.
This may seem evident, but this is something that many homeowners surprisingly skip over. If the potential roofing company only has a post office box and no physical address, or does not show proof of having a licensed company name, this should be a red flag.  First, check reviews online under the company’s name and see what you can find. Read through as many reviews as you can and weigh the positives and negatives. Replacing your roof is a big deal and you need to find a company that has a great reputation for efficiency and quality.

Question #2: Ask about insurance.
Did you know that Workman’s Compensation as well as liability insurance will help protect you as the homeowner in the event of an accident? Without workman’s compensation insurance, you could be put at risk of paying costly medical bills or other out of pocket costs if the person you hired is injured while working on your house.  Liability insurance will help protect you from any damage that might happen while the company is working on the roof.  Most often, your homeowner’s insurance will not always cover these types of problems, so make sure you ask the roofer directly for insurance verification.  so be sure you ask the roofer for verification of this coverage.

Question #3: Ask for references.
If the company you’re looking at hiring has a poor reputation in the industry, has a variety of negative reviews online, or is unwilling to provide a list of past client references, be aware as this could be a negative sign. Ask for references as well as other local job site locations where you can drive by and look at the work that was done.

Lifetime Windows & Doors is committed to integrity and quality customer service with all of our roof replacement jobs! In fact, did you know that we won the esteemed Angie’s List award last year? Is it time to replace the windows in your home? If the windows in your home are old and you need to replace them with new, energy efficient windows, summer is a great time to get them replaced. The weather is warm and dry and you don’t need to worry about excess moisture leaking in. But, did you know that your old windows can be repurposed and reused? In this post, we’ll show you how your old windows – with or without glass – can be a unique and functional way to decorate your home. With a little creativity and imagination, you can make something interesting and fun for your space!

homeblog1Idea #1: Picture frames.
If you have old windows that have panels with glass in them, you can easily repurpose these into a unique picture frame. Paint the trim whatever color matches the room you want to display it in, and add pictures directly to the glass.

homeblog2Idea #2: Shelf.
Turn your old window into a shelf for displaying pictures, candles, books, or other decorative items. Paint it whatever color you want, add some brackets, and grab a piece of wood that’s cut to size so you can add the shelf to it. A small project like this can add a special touch to your home!

homeblog3Idea #3: Use as a room divider.
Do you have a couple of large windows that are sitting around unused? Hang them from the ceiling and use them as a decorative way to separate rooms. This could be a great idea for a living and dining room separation.

homeblog4Idea #4: Create a wall of old windows.

Decorating with old windows has become a popular “shabby chic” style or those that simply love integrating old and new together. Why You Should Start Planning Your Window Renovation Now

0

Your home is a special place and keeping it clean, updated, and functioning well is important. Budgeting for home improvement projects is part of being a homeowner, and most of the time, these projects are well worth the investment.

How do you know if your home needs new windows?
If you’ve noticed that your windows are leaking air from the outside in or from the inside out, you may have windows that are old and not energy efficient. Or, if you’ve noticed that your utility bill has increased significantly during the winter months when the heat is on all the time or in the summer when the air conditioning is running continually, some new windows may be in order.  Or, maybe you have cracked window panes or your home is older and it lacks the proper insulation or energy efficient windows to keep your home at a consistent temperature. One of our experienced professionals can spot an older window and provide suggestions on what options there are to replace them.

Why should you plan for window replacement?
If new windows are not in your home improvement budget yet, that’s okay. Start saving up for it. We install new windows all year long. Your first step is to have one of our window experts visit your home to determine if all of the windows in your home should be replaced or if there are some that are more of a priority than others. We can help find windows that will not only provide greater energy efficiency, but also help give your home a new, updated look. We will look at each room in the home and point out details and recommendations that you might not even think to ask about!  Our free in-home estimates will help give you an idea on the cost, as well. This way, if your budget only allows for a couple of windows to be replaced at a time, we can help determine which ones to do first and which ones to do later down the road.

We are proud to serve Portland and the surrounding areas as well as Central Oregon. Our company has a sterling reputation that has been built over the last couple of decades and we’re proud of our team. Let us help you prioritize your project!

Tiny Homes Are The New Trend

0
0

Tiny homes: more and more people are becoming interested in this housing option, simply because they’re incredibly affordable and it allows them to purchase something without a substantial mortgage payment each month. The Pacific Northwest isn’t the only place that the tiny home trend is picking up speed in. In fact, buying tiny homes is something that’s become popular around the country.

What are tiny homes?
These homes are also known as accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and can range from 200 square feet to 800 square feet. They are relatively inexpensive to build or purchase and for prospective home buyers that want to live simply, this is a great option. In addition, for those that want to purchase a large plot of land but have a small home without much upkeep, tiny homes can work very well.  In Portland, home prices are becoming more and more expensive, so much so, that many families and individuals simply can’t afford to buy a home. Especially for these people, tiny homes can have a lot of appeal. According to the City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, in 2014, approximately one-fourth of single-dwelling development permit applications are for tiny homes and so far, there are 800 of them in the area. That number has continued to grow in recent years. (1)

Space in limited in a tiny home, but creativity is not. Tiny homes are designed uniquely – many times, each one is completely different from another. The other benefit: huge energy savings. These homes are incredibly energy efficient and are a great way to save money on utility bills year after year.  If you’re interested in building a tiny home for yourself or for your family, you’ll likely run across a variety of window options. Our team at Lifetime Windows & Doors can help you find the perfect energy efficient windows to make your tiny home into exactly what you want!

All it takes is the right few windows and no matter how hot or cold it is outside, you’ll be comfortable without any air leaking in or out of old windows. You’ll be able to rely on your windows to give you the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the outside for years to come! We’re proud to carry several brands, including Simonton as well as Milgard, which is a local Northwest company.

If you have decided that a tiny home is the right option for you, give us a call today and we’ll gladly help get the windows for your home ordered and ready for install! Our experienced team will help you find a system that will fit your home and budget perfectly, with no pressure.

3 Things New Homeowners Should Know About Their Roof

0
0

You’ve saved money for a down payment, you’ve toured countless amounts of homes, and you’ve finally signed the paperwork to purchase a new home. Congratulations! Now comes the fun (and sometimes challenging) part of being a new homeowner. Whether it’s cleaning gutters, tackling remodeling projects, or fixing little things that break over time through regular wear and tear, being a homeowner requires dedication and work. And when it comes to maintaining your roof, there are several important things to keep in mind. Here, we cover three important points that will help you keep your roof in great shape.

#1: Make sure to keep debris off your roof.
Living in the Pacific Northwest means there is plenty of rain and wind throughout the year. Be sure that you keep branches, leaves, and other loos debris off your roof so it doesn’t accumulate. On particularly wet days, be sure that you let the roof dry a bit before you climb up there to remove the debris, as roof material can be incredible slippery. In addition, be sure to keep your gutters and downspouts as free of debris as possible.

#2: Inspect your roof on a regular basis.
Your roof should be inspected often for missing or loose shingles, exposed nails, or any other problem spots that may need attention. If you notice curled shingles in various parts of the roof, it could mean that the roof is close to needed replacement. Also, check the inside of your attic as well as the ceilings in your home to be sure that there is no water leaking from the roof inside. This can cause mold to form and if it’s left unattended, it can be expensive and time consuming to fix.

#3: Keep moss off your roof.
Moss build up on your roof can cause damage over time. Head to your local home improvement store and purchase a top quality moss cleaner and let the solution do the work in killing the moss. You’ll need to apply it with a broom or wide brush, but never use power washers or bristled brushes, as this can cause the granules on the roof to wear away prematurely or could damage the shingles permanently.

Don’t neglect your roof! In addition to your own regular maintenance and care of your roof, have our team of roofing specialists check your roof on a regular basis. Our experienced team has the expertise and know-how that is needed to recognize the signs of roof decay or damage before you might recognize them. We love serving Portland, Bend and Central Oregon area customers! Contact us today if you need expert advice on maintaining your roof.

Which door should you get?

Things To Look For When Hiring A Company For Roof Replacement

Idea #1: Picture frames.
If you have old windows that have panels with glass in them, you can easily repurpose these into a unique picture frame. Paint the trim whatever color matches the room you want to display it in, and add pictures directly to the glass.

Idea #2: Shelf.

Turn your old window into a shelf for displaying pictures, candles, books, or other decorative items. Paint it whatever color you want, add some brackets, and grab a piece of wood that’s cut to size so you can add the shelf to it. A small project like this can add a special touch to your home!

Idea #3: Use as a room divider.
Do you have a couple of large windows that are sitting around unused? Hang them from the ceiling and use them as a decorative way to separate rooms. This could be a great idea for a living and dining room separation.

Idea #4: Create a wall of old windows.

Decorating with old windows has become a popular “shabby chic” style or those that simply love integrating old and new together. If you have a home that has a variety of old windows of various sizes that are not being used, put them all together on one wall and create a distinct gallery wall of windows.

How to keep your windows clean in the summer

0

Summer heat is back in action this week and it’s a great time to be outside. But even if you’re stuck inside, you can still enjoy the summer sunshine through your windows! Sun that streams through your windows at home can lift your spirits and keep you energized, but if your windows are dirty, it will be harder to enjoy looking outside. Don’t let dirty windows cloud your life. Here’s what you can do to keep them sparkling during the summer.

Tip #1: Start on the outside.
Keeping the exterior of your windows clean is the first step. If you have screens on your windows, remove them and wash them, as dust, pollen, and other debris will become caught in the mesh over time. Then, this will transfer to the windows during rainy weather.

Tip #2: Keep foliage, barbecues, and sprinklers away from windows.
If you have a barbecue near a window at home, make sure that you move it at least five feet away from the windows when you’re grilling. The smoke and the grease from the grill can begin collecting on the glass and over time, this will create a film on the window. If you have trees and bushes near your windows, be sure to keep them trimmed, not touching the window. Pollen and dirt can build up on the trees and bushes, which is then transferred to your windows for accumulation. The same goes for sprinklers: if water hits the windows, hard water stains can cause mineral deposit stains on the windows and if they aren’t cleaned, can cause damage over time.

Tip #3: Keep your HVAC system cleaned.
Your HVAC system should have its filter replaced every two months or so. This will not only keep your heating and cooling system maintained, but it will also reduce the amount of contaminants that enter your home through the system and ultimately reduce the amount of dust, pollen, or other airborne particles that lead to residue on the inside of your windows.

The windows of your home are one of the most important parts of it. They add value and natural light to your space without using expensive electricity. Cleaning them regularly – either by yourself or with a professional window cleaner – can help maintain their quality over time. Or, perhaps it’s time to replace all the windows in your home and upgrade to new, energy efficient windows. Contact us today for options and pricing that fits your budget. We are proud to serve Portland and the surrounding areas as well as Central Oregon. Our company has a sterling reputation that has been built over the last couple of decades and we’re proud of our team. Let us help you prioritize your project!
