Triple vs. Double Pane Windows: What are the differences?

$

0

Windows are a big investment for your home and choosing the right ones is very important. You will be enjoying the windows and the views of the outside for many years to come, so doing your research before you make the final purchase is key. You might have been reading about double and triple pane windows, but aren’t sure which one to select. What are the differences between triple or double pane windows?

Some windows consist of two panes of glass and they have the option of gas or krypton spacers that keep them separated and used as an insulator. Triple panes have three panes of glass and they do a better job than double pane windows on preserving energy in your home. These windows are designed to help reduce sound transmission, but more importantly will keep outside air from getting in and allow the air inside to stay in.  Triple pane windows are a little more expensive, so they are a great investment for individuals looking to live in their home for a long time. They can help reduce heating bills by 2-3% in a year, in areas that are very cold in the winter. Both triple and double pane windows are good at blocking outside sounds, too.

When you are doing your research on windows, ask our team of window experts about the U-value of the windows, too. Higher U-values are more efficient when it comes to blocking heat transfer than windows that have lower U-value. During the winter, windows with high U-values will help keep your home warmer and in the summer, it will help keep warm air from seeping in to the inside.

If your home has old and inefficient single-pane windows, you are likely losing money in energy costs. Double and triple pane windows will make a huge difference in your home and are well worth the money you invest in them. Multi-paned windows come in a variety of designs that can fit your home’s style and we are proud to offer a wide selection of windows that are rated high with Energy Star labels. We’re also proud to be a three-start trade ally of Energy Trust of Oregon. If you want more information, we can go over which windows will fit your home’s style and most importantly, your budget.

We’re happy to answer any questions you have about energy efficiency or other important differences between the various windows. In addition, there are rebates and incentives for eligible energy-efficient windows, so you can save money at the same time!

Contact us today if you need expert advice on window replacement in Portland, OR and don’t wait any longer to get your windows updated. 2017 is the year to start enjoying the benefits of new windows!

What New Homeowners Should Know About Their Roof

$

0

The process of buying a home includes so many details and once you’ve finally signed the papers, it’s time to celebrate! But then comes the ins and outs of what it takes to be a homeowner and there is a lot to learn. Whether it’s learning how to regularly clean out your gutters, completely replacing your siding, replacing windows, or determining if you need a new roof, there is a lot to research that is involved. When it comes to your roof, there are several important things to keep in mind.

Tip #1: Keep dirt and debris off the roof as much as possible.
Living in the Pacific Northwest means that you’ll experience plenty of rainy weather. Rain and wind lasts for sometimes days and weeks on end, and when this happens, it’s important to keep any leaves, branches, or other significant debris from accumulating on your home’s roof – especially after a storm. Be sure that the roof has dried off a bit before you attempt climbing up there to clean it off. Roof material is generally very slippery and it can be dangerous when it is slick. Once you’ve made it to the top of the roof, be sure to clean any obvious debris from the gutters and downspout areas as well, as this can cause roof damage over time if it’s left unattended.

Tip #2: Make sure mold and moss is not growing.
There are a variety of moss cleaners on the market today, so if you have noticed that your roof has moss buildup on it, use a cleaner to help get it off. Most local hardware or home improvement stores carry this item. Then, brush or sweep it away with a broom or wide brush. Avoid using bristled brushes or power washers, as these can cause the UV-protectant granules on the roof to wear away prematurely.

Tip #3: Inspect the roof regularly.
Throughout the year, be sure to inspect the roof regularly, looking for loose or missing shingles or other exposed areas that may need attention. If you notice a lot of peeled or curling shingles, a full replacement may need to be made. While you’re doing regular inspections, check the attic and other interior ceiling areas for water damage or leaks. This could cause significant damage and even mold buildup, which can be a health hazard and can also be costly to fix.

If you have recently moved into your home and the roof is older, there are several added benefits to having it replaced right when you move in. It takes away the risk of leaks and adds value to your home almost instantaneously!

Your new home is an investment and is a big part of your life and who you are. Taking care of your roof is an important job and if you’re not sure where to start when it comes to routine maintenance or a complete replacement, our professionals at Lifetime Windows & Doors can help. We use only Hardie products in roof replacements, which is known as the best, and it’s a local Pacific Northwest business. A top quality roof will serve you well for decades. Why You Should Replace Siding and Windows at the Same Time

$

If you’re thinking about giving your home a great upgrade with new windows, that can be a great time to do a total makeover with new siding, too. It will make the aesthetics of your home flow together and soon, it will look fresh and updated!

Did you know we can help with your siding and window replacements? Replacing your windows and siding at the same time will allow us to set the capping around the window before we put in the siding. This process helps keep the water away from the frame and the inside of the walls.  Getting the siding first, then installing the windows could end up saving you money later down the road.

Window installations oftentimes require us to cut back portions of the siding. Sometimes, this leads to discovering dry rot, which can be fixed by replacing the siding. Prior to patching the one area of siding, you may wonder if there is dry rot in other places, so it’s oftentimes a better choice to just replace all of the siding at once, rather than pieces at a time. In addition, this issue could mean that there are bigger problems, like rotting boards and leaks inside of your home’s interior, which could lead to high energy costs and even health issues. If this problem is discovered, it is best to take care of it right away in order to avoid further damage down the road.

We are proud to use locally-produced James Hardie siding products, which are known for their quality, reliability, and durability for years to come. We offer Primed and Color Plus Smooth & Cedarmill lap siding. Siding replacement is known to offer the maximum return on investment. James Hardie siding is resistant to mold damage, swelling, cracking, and peeling paint. In addition, this siding will not ignite if exposed to a flame, it will not contribute fuel to any fire, and because it’s fiber cement, it will not appeal to pests such as termites. So, no matter what type of things your home exposed to, you can trust that the siding will withstand it all.

Tackling a new window and new siding project can be a costly investment. We’re committed to helping you get your house upgraded, while sticking within your budget. Because it’s a larger project, we have financing available as an option to pay for this great upgrade. The benefits of new windows and siding is not just that it’s aesthetically pleasing, but you’ll see better energy performance, a reduction in energy costs, and new windows usually block sound better than old, inefficient windows. You’ll notice a difference in how quiet is and you’ll also enjoy the new look that the siding has to give!

Our team of professionals at Lifetime Windows & Doors can help find you the right windows and right siding! Contact us for more details.

THE RIGHT WINDOWS & DOORS FOR EVERY HILLSBORO HOME

One size does not fit all when it comes to choosing the right Hillsboro, OR replacement window or entry door. Every structure and every family is unique. To help you understand your options, Lifetime Windows & Doors has created this generalized rubric to match your home’s structure with the right replacement features:

The Modern Home
Often, homeowners confuse the term modern with contemporary. Our team describes the Modern Home in this way: connected to the “age of machination” (1920s-1950s).

  • Entry doors: Clean lines, geometric shapes, maximum glass and/or minimal detail (in the wood or glasswork).
  • Windows: Used in places where walls would typically be placed (i.e.: corner windows); intentional asymmetry.

The Contemporary Home
Again, not to be confused with the Modern Home. Contemporary architecture is the “right now” home. It is the present house and is eclectic without being too much of any one thing; constantly changing. If you are the owner of a contemporary home, you like to borrow bits and pieces from a variety of looks and eras. That said, here are tips for choosing the best entry door and windows for your style:

  • Entry doors: Mix it up. Choose a traditional style door in a bright color or with industrial-like hardware. Or, choose a wood door with design features which remind you of your favorite era and opt for modern-day glass design and choose from one of our many handle designs.
  • Windows: Contemporary homes are usually “open concept.” Windows can enhance this throughout the home—choose large picture windows or glass walls to complement your home’s spaciousness.

The Traditional Home
The traditional home is all about elegance, timelessness, sensibility, and organic (looking) features.

  • Entry doors: Neutral and earthy hues, practical—yet still detailed—glasswork. Wood-grain fiberglass is a great choice for the traditional home, as are double pre-hung doors or a single pre-hung door with sidelites.
  • Windows: Same as with doors—natural and earthy hues with organic-like features (wood-grain fiberglass, wood, or vinyl).

The Historic Home
Historic homes typically require customized designs and organic materials to maintain the integrity of the original structure as much as possible.

  • Entry doors: Wood material with stain to complement/match the home. You’ll want to choose hardware that matches the decade from which the home originated and glass details to suit. Depending on your home and the era in which it was built, the best option may or may not have windows, a door knocker, peephole, or sidelights.
  • Windows: Again, wood material with a style that matches or is customized to match your home’s unique structure and era.

Home styles are all very different. If you are unsure or undecided on what choices to make for your next replacement door or window project, call the professional and experienced team at Lifetime Windows & Doors—or stop by our showroom to explore your many options. We can’t wait to match your home with the perfect complementary features.

RENOVATING YOUR MASTER SUITE WITH LIFETIME WINDOWS & DOORS

It’s 2017—the year you vowed to renovate your bedroom into a master suite. Whether you are motivated by plans to sell or the vision of a beautiful oasis inside your home, renovating the master suite is an exciting endeavor. There’s much to think about: colors, an en suite with exotic tile work, French patio doors to a walkout private sundeck, or even upgraded windows to pull it all together.

Lifetime Windows & Doors has your new patio doors and windows in Lake Oswego, OR covered. Our team of experts has been serving Lake Oswego and its surrounding areas since 1998—we are very familiar with master suite renovations and would be delighted to co-design with you. Here are our top choices in patio doors and windows for your future oasis:

#1 – French Doors

French doors have a romantic, timeless feel to them. This works nicely in a master suite (regardless of your home’s specific style) because these doors promote a slumber-like, “love-struck” vibe—perfect for couples and singles, alike.  Because you can choose whether your doors open inward or outward, it will afford flexibility for any style floor plan or room layout.

#2 – Sliding Doors

Even a master suite or a walkout sundeck may not have all the space you need to have doors swing open. Sliding doors can be just as stunning—plus, they work well in tighter or oddly shaped spaces.

#3 – Picture Windows

A large picture window or wall of picture windows  are a beautiful addition to an en suite. Natural light will flood your bathroom and still provide privacy with obscured or etched glass.

#4 – Bay Windows

Our team can create the perfect reading nook with our beautiful bay window designs, adding charm, sophistication, and maximum natural light into your space. If a reading nook is not your style, but you love the idea of extending the square footage in your master bedroom, consider using it for a small sitting area or pseudo-greenhouse for your favorite, calming plants.

#5 – Bow Window

Not to be confused with bay windows, though these are similar. With bow windows, you will inherit a larger looking room without the added square footage. You can use the additional  from this curved window option for any room from the living room to the master bedroom to display collectibles, books, frames, a pet perch, or plants.

#6 – Single- and double-hung windows

Timeless, classy, and romantic—just how a bedroom should feel. These windows allow optimal air circulation in the spring and summer  and a tight seal when the cold months hit Oregon. They are versatile to match any home style, without appearing too plain. Also, screens work with this window style!

Our team at Lifetime Windows & Doors, would love to help you renovate your bedroom into the gorgeous, functional master suite you have always wanted. Any questions or concerns you may have—we will help you work through them. Don’t hesitate to give us a call or stop by our showroom; where you will find real examples of what the finished product will be. We will discuss your budget, your needs, your wish-list items and together, we will lay out steps to get you to your design goals. 2017 is your year!

THE PERFECT ENTRYWAY

$

0

There are many keys features to an inviting entryway and our team at Lifetime Windows & Doors loves helping our clients reinvent theirs. Here in Tigard, OR, we have grown very fond of the entryway and all we can do to customize it with our high-end windows and doors.

Consider this: the right entry door and flanked sidelites in perfect harmony. Windows high above for added “wow-factor” and natural light.  The right hue for the feng shui enthusiast in the family. Enough space to get yourself and your busy family in and out on schedule.

These things are not “too good to be true.” Our team has been in the business of lovely and functional entryways for nearly two decades. We understand. Further, we know each home and each family has a specific set of design needs.

The smaller or dual-purpose entryway
Slight, non-descript entryways are common in small homes or condos. Often, an entryway is simply a doorway to a living room or kitchen. To be frank, a formal entryway is a luxury, so when space or cost is in question, the entryway is one of the first “rooms” to go. In this case, we would want to bring in added natural light with high-up awning or small, geometric picture windows, which will naturally create the illusion of a grander space. Which direction does your current door swing open (left/right)? The direction can make a huge difference in space utilization. Also, downsizing your door (if you have double-doors or an oversized single door) will give you added wall space for built-in storage, coat hooks, shoe placement, a family “planning system,” etc.

The split-entryway
Common in the ‘90s—the entryway has its own small to sizable “landing” or mudroom for shoes, coats, and perhaps a small closet. In general, a sizable entry door with one to two sidelights is ideal, here. Split-entry homes are often modern or traditional, so a little asymmetry (choosing one sidelight) and wood-grain fiberglass or real wood are beautiful choices. Typically, wall space in this type of entryway is limited; we can add small, rectangular picture windows above the doorway for added light without compromised privacy and—if there’s additional wall space—perhaps a narrow slider window above the coat rack or next to the shoe closet.

The formal or large entryway
The bigger the space, the more options we have for your Tigard home! We can take advantage of high walls with 10’ foot double-doors and grand customized windows above and around the doors. If your family is more interested in unique and non-traditional options, we’ll look at our industrial-inspired or contemporary doors with their clean lines and stunning peculiarities.

We hope you are as excited as we are to re-imagine your entryway. At Lifetime Windows & Doors, you will find expertise, creativity, and enthusiasm. The best part of our job is co-designing with you! Our goal is to ensure your satisfaction so you can have the home of your dreams. Questions? Give our team a call—we look forward to your next Tigard, OR entry door project!

TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE BEST WINDOWS & DOORS INSTALLER

$

Choosing the right window or door installation company can be daunting. There’s so much to think about: time, cost, experience, quality, etc. Because there’s a lot to consider, homeowners often find themselves stuck and unsure of how to narrow down the right company for the job.

At Lifetime Windows & Doors, we want you to feel confident in whoever you choose to entrust your home. Follow these tips to help you select the right window and door company for your Tualatin, OR, home!

  1. Choose a professional
This means you need to choose a company that is at least 5-10 years old. A company which has been around for at least this amount of time has experience with installations and any issues that might be inherent to the job.
  2. Rapport, rapport, rapport
Your family and friends may have good insight into local businesses. Ask around—who’s recently renovated their home? Who did they use? What did they think of the process from start to finish? These questions will help guide you in the right direction. Remember: family and neighbors will be eager to help and have little reason to give untrue reviews.
  3. Don’t sign anything too soon!
Some installation companies will try to push you into a decision before you’re ready—beware of this and consider it a preview to your future working relationship. This is your money, your home, and your time—this is your decision and you should feel comfortable with it.
  4. Compare

Do some research. The world is at our fingertips; use the internet to your advantage. Check out website reviews, Yelp or Angies List.   Pleased and displeased clients are willing to jump online and submit a review of their most recent experiences—so search out the company or companies you’re considering and see what other homeowners have to share about their recent window and door replacement projects. Focus on these three things:

  • Complaints—were they legitimate?
  • Praises—what specifics did other clients share that made for positive experiences?
  • Responses—how did the company respond to complaints and positivity?

  1. Warranties & rebates
Always, always ask about the details of any warranties and rebates and how they apply to your project. Beware of companies which do not warranty their installation work.
  2. Follow your instincts
If you do not feel comfortable moving forward with a dealer – don’t. Bear in mind, you will be opening your home to a stranger during your renovation or replacement project, so you want to feel confident in your family’s safety and your overall security. At Lifetime Windows & Doors, we do not sub-contract our installers.  Our installations specialists are employees and are trained and experienced with all the quality brands we offer.

Our team of experts have been serving clients statewide for 19 years and counting. We are the leading provider of windows and doors in Tualatin and Portland area and are proudly dedicated to high quality, efficient, and environmentally friendly ethos.

If you are still unsure of your decision regarding the best installation crew for your project, please put us to the test. We are confident you’ll find the team at Lifetime Windows & Doors to be kind, friendly, qualified, fair, and in excellent standing with our current and previous clients. We look forward to earning your business.

The Benefits Of Using Natural Light In Your Home

Sisters OR Replacement Windows

Since springtime has arrived, we’re heading into the months of lighter and longer days, which means more sunlight will be making its way through the windows of your home. Using natural light in your home, otherwise known as “daylighting”, creates a welcoming and warm atmosphere in any room of the home, but it also has some other great benefits.

Benefit #1: Energy savings.
If you use natural light in your home and the warmth that comes from the sun as your heating source in some of the rooms of your home, you’ll save significant energy and reduce your utility bill. In addition, energy efficient windows are also a great way to save money on utility costs and do a great job in reducing energy usage and minimizing your negative impact on the environment. Picture windows are a great energy efficient option. These are fixed, non-opening windows that allow wonderful light to pour in throughout each day. These windows can be used in many different types of spaces.

Benefit #2: It’s good for your mind and body.
Our bodies crave natural light and if we don’t get enough of it, your body and mental state can suffer. Natural light – especially in workspaces – can bolster productivity and allows for enhanced concentration.  Garden windows are also a great window installation option, so you can take advantage of the sunlight to grow small plants, herbs, or flowers. Both Milgard and Simonton offer garden windows and we’re proud to install them!

Benefit #3: Comfort.
There’s nothing nicer than sitting back in a warm and sunny spot in your living room in your favorite chair. Utilizing the sun’s position at home can help keep it comfortable, no matter what the season is outside. Learn how the sun is positioned throughout the day so you can maximize and control the daylight effectively. During the colder months, keep your curtains open so you can use the heat from the light. During the warmer months, keep the blinds cracked or closed so the direct sunlight doesn’t overheat your space. Bay windows are great windows that can help you relax, because they usually have three large windows encased by a lovely bench or seating area. On a nice spring day, imagine grabbing your favorite book and blanket and sitting down to relax in your window.

Which windows allow the most natural light in your home?
If you’re building a new home or need to upgrade your windows to new, energy efficient ones, we’re glad to help you pick out some great options that will work well for your space and the layout of your home so you can be sure to maximize the use of daylight as much as possible.

No matter what kind of window you’re interested in, we can find some that fit your home’s style! We are proud to offer a wide selection of windows that are rated high with Energy Star labels. We’re also honored to be a three-start trade ally of Energy Trust of Oregon. We’re happy to answer any questions you have about energy efficiency or other important differences between various window styles. In addition, there are rebates and incentives for eligible energy-efficient windows, so you can save money at the same time! Contact us today if you need expert advice on window installation or window replacement in Oregon and Washington. Springtime is the perfect time to enjoy the sun and the benefits of new windows!

Home renovations typically include a whole-home replacement project for windows and entryway doors, which can feel like an overwhelming undertaking. Further, changing these particular features transforms and elevates the look of a structure, so choosing wisely is imperative. To ensure your home is upgraded with the best of the best—review this guide:

  1. Check the brands
Quality materials come from quality brands. This will take a bit of research on your end but will be well worth it. Names you can trust:
  • Milgard windows and doors: local Oregon window and door manufacturer specializing in vinyl, wood-clad, aluminum, and fiberglass.
  • Simonton windows and doors: extensive experience in vinyl window design and manufacturing and beautiful, durable doors.
  • Solar View windows: dual-paned windows with triple-pane “behavior:” clear, highly energy efficient, beautiful.
  • Simpson doors: large range of wood doors in inspiring styles (size limit: 6’ wide by 10’ tall)
  • Masonite doors: decorative fiberglass and steel doors with a wide range of traditional sizes and designs. All doors include intricate glass inlays which can be mixed-and-matched to suit your personal design perspective.
  • Codel doors: leading manufacturer in the Pacific Northwest of pre-hung steel and fiberglass entry doors. Many feature beveled glass.
  • Beffelen doors: another beautiful wood door option with more than 100 years of customization experience.
  • Therma-Tru doors: one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of steel and fiberglass door systems since 1962—specializing in that “wood-grain” look.
  1. Compare your options
It’s always good to compare and contrast the pros and cons (as applicable to your home, family, budget, and needs) between the different styles and brands. You may find you are surprised by what will and will not work best with your architecture and design preferences. Compare everything: colors, materials, hardware, window and door styles (and how they complement one another), shapes and sizes, cost.

  2. Do not compromise on energy efficiency
Why purchase replacement windows and doors if they won’t serve your home and your wallet for the better? Energy efficient products save you in the long-run in energy costs (heating and cooling). Look for the ENERGY STAR sticker for specific ratings.

  3. Let the ratings be your guide
Window ratings will tell you everything you need to know to make an informed decision. Be sure to familiarize yourself with U-factor and R-value and remember that the lower the number, the better the rating.

  4. Rapport and longevity
Whatever windows or entry door you choose be sure to choose a reputable company with years of installation experience—you do not want a brand new installer working on your home. Quality work is as important as quality materials.

Renovating your windows and entry door in Vancouver, WA does not have to be an overwhelming task. Call the team at Lifetime Windows & Doors. We look forward to working with you and achieving the design you want with the dependability you need for your Vancouver home. Any questions you may have—bring them to us! We hope to see you soon!

3 Reasons Why You Should Replace Your Roof in the Spring

$
0
0

Your roof is key to the overall integrity of your home and if it’s time to replace it, springtime is a great time to do it. Here are three reasons why.

Reason #1: The weather is getting better.
Springtime can definitely be rainy, but we’re getting more accustomed to longer stretches of sun and dry weather. It’s also warmer and easier to get roof work done! Replacing your old roof with one that improves your home energy efficiency will also save you money on your heating and cooling bills, especially once the warm summer weather starts up.

Reason #2: You can take advantage of your tax return.
If you have recently filed your tax return and you’re expecting to get a little bit back in the form of a return, why not put it towards a new roof? If your roof is old, leaking, or has suffered damage from wind, falling debris, or other weather-related problems, you’ll reach a point where the roof will have to be replaced. By making the investment into a new roof now, you could be saving yourself from future problems that could be very expensive later down the road. Using a portion of your tax return money means you won’t need to come up with the money unexpectedly later down the road when the roof is in such bad shape that you’re forced to replace it

Reason #3: You’ll add value to your home.
If you’re thinking about selling your home in the next several years and you know the roof is nearing the end of its life, it’s a great idea to replace the roof. You will instantly increase your home’s value and you’ll also enhance your home’s curb appeal, which will make a great first impression on prospective homebuyers.

A new roof is a worthwhile investment and our professionals at Lifetime Windows & Doors can help. We use only Hardie products in roof replacements, which is known as the best, and is a local Pacific Northwest business. A top quality roof will serve you well for decades. Contact us for more details.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WINDOWS FOR YOUR PORTLAND HOME

$
0
0

There are few experiences more heartening than sitting in your home, sipping coffee, and relishing the beautiful (or lively) view, and sunlight shining through the windows. Whether conscious of it or not, your windows connect you to the outdoors and bring balance, safety, and security to your life.

When it comes to upgrading your current windows or choosing new windows for a to-be-built structure, it can be difficult to decide which style is best. The team here at Lifetime Windows & Doors has created these 4 helpful tips for choosing the right window style for your home:

  1. Choose windows which reflect your home’s unique architectural style
Even the most generic looking structures have a unique architectural design; choosing windows which match the home’s unique elements is step #1 in choosing correctly. Regardless of the style—contemporary, traditional, Tudor style, eclectic, or mid-century modern—it’s important to defer to your home’s architecture for guidance. Here are some examples:
  • Craftsman bungalow: double-hung and casement windows give nod to the mid-century movement of the 1920s.
  • Tudor: casement windows complement the early English traditions.
  • Traditional: single- and double-hung, bay, and arched decorative windows are as practical as they are fitting.
  • Contemporary: horizontal sliders and picture windows add awe and clean lines.
  1. Evaluate the purpose you intend your windows to serve
Consider in which rooms you want certain functions. Is airflow important to you in the bedrooms? Do you prefer a lot of natural light in the living room? Where would adding different styles for increased character most please you, from a design perspective?
  2. Select options that appeal to the interior of the home
Of course, the exterior aesthetic of your windows is important. But, you want the window to serve the interior as well; creating good experiences for you and your family. Examples of this are:
  • Bathroom: look for windows which allow natural light to shine in without providing additional angles from the outdoors (unless the room is high up or is hidden by a permanent obstruction).
  • Living room: if the space is large enough, consider a great picture window. This will not only open up the space and create a grander illusion, it will provide a beautiful “picture” backdrop for your daily living.
  • Guest bedrooms: function is likely the key; consider horizontal sliders or wide casement windows so your guests can feel at home and in charge of the natural light and fresh air they wish to have.
  1. Consider the orientation of the sun before committing to a window style/size
Our professionals can help you with this. It’s important to consider how your home sits in relation to the sunrise and sunset. You don’t want too much late day sun or too little morning sunlight. Further, choosing the right window placement and size with smart window treatments will ensure your home heats and cools more naturally.

We hope these tips help point you in the right design direction. For more tips on choosing the right windows in Portland, OR, give Lifetime Windows & Doors a call!

Pro: new vinyl windows are an investment
New, vinyl replacement windows are an instant investment into your future. Should you soon decide to sell or refinance your home new windows significantly increase its value.

Pro: Affordable
Our vinyl windows are among some of the most affordable windows on the market. In general, vinyl will more cost effective than the other material options.

Pro: Great Insulator = Lower Energy Bill
Everyone wants to save money wherever possible and when it comes to your heating and cooling bills, vinyl windows will save you money. Vinyl is known for its energy efficiency. In fact, there is little-to-no energy loss through vinyl frames or sashes. In comparison with other materials, vinyl has the lead in keeping energy costs down. In comparison to two other leading materials:

  • Wood windows can warp over time, degrading their thermal performance.
  • Aluminum windows are a poor insulator because it is an energy conductor.

Pro: Low Maintenance
Unlike other window frame materials, vinyl windows require only the occasional cleaning with a damp towel. Vinyl will not warp, crack, split, rot, mold, or attract bugs due to its sturdy plastic makeup. Also, when and if you do have an unexpected stain, there are some (surprising) simple solutions:

  • Tar: Soft Scrub®
  • Felt-tip Pen: Water based cleaners
  • Gum: A solution of 30% vinegar and 70% water; Windex®
  • Crayon: Lestoil®
  • Grass: Windex®, Lysol®
  • Oil: Soft Scrub®
  • Lipstick: Lysol®
  • Mold/Mildew: A solution of 30% vinegar and 70% water, Windex®
  • Motor Oil: Windex®, Lysol®
  • Pencil: Soft Scrub®

Pro: Durable
Here in the Northwest, we are no stranger to cold weather. Thankfully, vinyl is known for its resistance to cold and heat. This means that fluctuations and harsh conditions outdoors will never be felt indoors. So, you can remain comfortable and consistent all year long. Further, this material will not easily dent or break, which is good news, considering the occasional severe storms we endure here in Oregon.

Pro: Low Environmental Impact
Many people do not realize vinyl is recyclable—which makes them a very environmentally friendly window choice.

Our team here at Lifetime Windows & Doors would be delighted to answer any further questions you may have about vinyl windows in Portland, OR. Contact us today or stop by and visit us; we’re waiting to just for you!

To Replace or Not to Replace: Your Portland Home Windows

When considering replacing windows, there always seems to be a gray period of time when the question lingers: is it time to replace these windows or do they have another good year or two left in them?

Our team can help. At Lifetime Windows & Doors, we specialize in window installation, repairs, and upkeep of all types of home windows. Further, we are partnered with the top window manufacturing companies in the country—which means our replacement windows will last for years and years and provide you beautiful, safe, and durable protection from the elements.

For nearly 20 years, Lifetime has been serving the Portland, OR, area to make the residents here feel more at home, surrounded by windows to frame the incredible views our state has to offer. And, we have learned a few things along the way. For starters, you should consider replacing your current windows when you have:

  • Warped or rotten wood frames.
  • Windows with condensation and fog between double-pane glass. If you are seeing this, the seals are broken and even though you may be able to get the window defogged, it’s best to replace the sash altogether.
  • Difficult-to-locate replacement hardware. This happens sometimes: window manufacturers may discontinue certain parts and they are nowhere to be found online. In this instance, a full window replacement may be the only option.
  • Broken window. Obviously, a replacement is needed (in cases of severe storm damage, baseballs through the window, etc.).
  • Energy inefficient windows. This is arguably in the gray area, for some. According to the professionals, a window which loses conditioned or heated air and/or is not doing its part to consistently regulate indoor temperatures is a window past its prime. Portland homeowners need windows that will assist them in keeping heating and air conditioning costs down, ensuring their families are comfortable, and consistently environmentally responsible.

If any or all of the above applies to your home windows, it is time to start thinking about your Portland, OR windows replacement project. Even if it’s just one window—give our team a call. When you do decide to get started, there are a handful of materials from which you can choose:

Vinyl
Pros: affordable, extremely durable, low maintenance, great insulator.
Cons: can’t be painted, somewhat limited color options.

Fiberglass
Pros: low maintenance, quite durable, can be painted.
Cons: a bit more expensive than vinyl.

Aluminum
Pros: thin frames, strong.
Cons: poor insulator, not ideal for coastal climates, due to the potential for corrosion.

Wood
Pros: ideal for custom work and historic structures, strong.
Cons: most expensive, requires constant maintenance.

It is important to remember not to overlook replacing windows as a necessary restoration project for your home. Portland residents who have entrusted Lifetime Windows & Doors agree: quality and beauty can coexist. Our team insists on providing our clients with the highest level of satisfaction—no matter how great or small the project. Contact our professional and friendly team to get started!

ENERGY EFFICIENT, ECO-FRIENDLY WINDOWS FOR THE ENVIRONMENTALLY-CONSCIOUS HOMEOWNER

Environmentalism is on the rise due to heightened awareness and understanding of what is—crucial for the environment. Businesses country-wide are putting extra emphasis on creating and offering environmentally-responsible products to their clients, as the demand continues to increase.

This all translates into current homeownership and craftsmanship. Here at Lifetime Windows & Doors in Portland, OR, for example, our team prides itself in providing high-quality and eco-friendly products. If energy efficiency is your goal, our team has you covered with our windows.

There has been so much advancement in window technology. In fact, finding a window that isn’t energy efficient is tough.

How energy efficient windows benefit your family

Besides making you feel good about your choice and the effect it will have on your environment, here’s how choosing energy efficient windows through Lifetime will help you and yours:

–    Energy efficient windows lower HVAC costs

–    Energy efficient windows reduce annual heating and cooling bills

–    Often times, energy efficient windows effectively reduce UV rays which enter your home and fade furniture, walls, art, rugs, etc.

–    Energy efficient windows reduce frost and condensation

–    Energy efficient windows have a similar technology to that of the glass used for vehicle windshields—that is to say, they have increased safety and durability

What is ENERGY STAR rating?

The trademark ENERGY STAR is an international standard for energy efficient consumer products which originated in the United States in 1992 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). In order for a product, like a window, to boast this rating, it must meet very stringent, very specific stipulations. For more information, go here: https://www.energystar.gov/about

Example: Vinyl Windows—the environmentally sound choice

Our vinyl windows (otherwise known as PVC material) can be 100% recycled and up to 80% of post-industrial vinyl is reclaimed and recycled. For the environmentally-minded, these are incredible statistics. Further, even though vinyl products have gotten bad press in recent years—these are the facts for those concerned with responsible living!

Example: Wood Windows—another environmentally sound choice

It is challenging to find a more environmentally conscious material than wood. Anytime we can use organic materials, we are automatically using something that can be recycled or given back to the Earth, which is the essence of sustainable practices and responsible stewardship. In the past, homeowners have had mixed feeling about using wood windows due to the controversy surrounding deforestation. These days, however, window manufacturers often used their own crops/exclusive forests from which to draw, so as not to affect the forest population and natural habitats we hold so dear.

How the Lifetime team can serve you

As a group, we have over 20 years of experience in the remodeling industry and desire to put this experience to work for the residents in and around the Portland area. Further, we are a trade ally with the Energy Trust of Oregon and we work hard to ensure you qualify for any and all consumer cash-back incentives connected to an energy-efficient window installation.

Our team of professionals would love to help find you the right eco-friendly and energy efficient windows in Portland, OR. Contact us today!

Home Improvements That Can Add Value

Your home is a part of you and taking good care of it can be fun, and allows you the opportunity to put your own touch on the home. Home improvement projects will reap the biggest returns when it comes time to sell your home, and in the meantime, you will enjoy living in an updated space. Some renovations, such as full room remodels or updates you make to the entire home, will add more value than others. Here are some home improvements that can add value to your home.

Improvement Idea #1: An Updated Front Door.
This is a pretty easy and inexpensive update, adding instant curb appeal and beauty! According to a 2014 report in Remodeling Magazine, you can add about 96% of the amount you spend into the value of your home. If you don’t need a new front door right now, but you are in need of other doors either in the back of your home that exit into the patio or backyard, we can help with that, too. We offer a variety of sliding doors, too. Whatever door you are looking to replace our team at Lifetime Windows and Doors has sells a variety of Simonton and Milgard doors that will fit the style you prefer.

Improvement Idea #2: New windows.
If you live in a home that has old windows, there is a good chance that they are leaking and inefficient. Replacing windows with new, energy efficient windows will not only add value to your home, but they’ll keep your home warmer/cooler throughout the year and you will likely see a decrease in your utility bills because less energy will be wasted. Furthermore, you’ll notice how quiet they keep your home – you won’t hear as much noise coming from outside!

Improvement Idea #3: New roof.
If you’re considering selling your home soon and the roof is nearing the end of its life, or you just need a new roof due to age or damage, you should consider replacing it this spring. A new roof will add instant value to your home when you go to sell it. It will also enhance your home’s curb appeal and make it more aesthetically pleasing. In addition, it can give potential homebuyers peace of mind that they won’t have to replace the roof for a long time, and this could give you a competitive edge in the real estate market.

When it comes to remodels or updates, talk to our experts at Lifetime Windows and Doors. If you have any questions about what updates would bring the best return for your specific home and neighborhood, we are happy to help and provide you product options that fit within your budget.

VINYL IS THE NEW “BLACK”: 4 REASONS VINYL WINDOWS ARE HERE TO STAY

$

Many trends come and go in fashion, in makeup, in food… and, in home design. There are trends we are all happy to see go. Remember parquet flooring? Remember small closets? Remember heavy, burgundy drapery? No one is sad these are no longer “in.” On the flipside, we can all agree there are staples that will never go out of style, such as big kitchens, durable home windows, and black pants.

Luckily, for us here at Lifetime Windows & Doors, window styles are based on much more stable grounds: personal preferences, home architecture, weather, and desired levels of natural light. You see, choosing windows for your home is a much more permanent decision than some of the paint trends and bedding fads we see sweep through magazines for a season—so homeowners in the Portland, OR, area want to choose wisely.

Our Lifetime team recognizes vinyl windows in Portland, OR as “the new black” in home improvement. Now, vinyl windows are necessarily a new concept (this material is new to the industry in comparison to other materials, though), but this is to say vinyl is as timeless as your best pair of black pants; it will always feel homey, look great, and stand-up against the ever-changing trends we see in home design.

So, why choose vinyl for your Portland home? Check out these 4 reasons you want to choose this timeless window material for your next replacement project:

  1. Maintenance-Free
This reason alone may be enough to send droves of homeowners to Lifetime to upgrade their current windows. Whereas wood windows require periodic refinishing, repainting, and/or staining, vinyl does not. A simple wipe-down with a damp cloth should do the trick to keep your vinyl windows looking as new as the day they were installed.
  2. Longevity
Quality vinyl windows like we have here at Lifetime will outlast wood and metal windows. Beyond our warranty (ask us for details!), vinyl will not warp, pit, rot, separate, discolor, or deteriorate.
  3. Durability—AKA Oregon-proof
We live in the Pacific Northwest; the weather can turn on us in an instant and if you’ve lived here for any amount of time you know this to be true. Scratch- and dent-resistant window material is a must. Further, vinyl is immune to climate and temperature changes, so bring on the rain!
  4. Affordable
Among the various window materials, vinyl is (typically) the most affordable. Why spend more on other windows when you can choose windows that are just as beautiful, more durable, less maintenance, and will last you a lifetime?
  5. Popular homeowners’ choice
It’s estimated that roughly half of all replacement windows purchased in the United States are made from vinyl. Half! Few products can boast that level of endorsement. Vinyl windows are becoming a house design staple for a reason. Ask around and find out what your friends and family think of their vinyl windows—chances are, you know many people who have them!

We understand the type of windows you select is a major home improvement decision, not a fad or trend that will be out next season. Call the experts here at Lifetime Windows & Doors to set up your free, in-home consultation today!

CHOOSING QUALITY WINDOWS: A HOW-TO GUIDE

Have your windows seen better days? Is it time to replace? For the modern homeowner, gone are the days when our interest in windows was confined to “whatever works” and whether or not we can find an appropriate window covering for the glass in each room. Today’s homeowner is energy conscious and is concerned with quality, look, and functionality.

The professionals at Lifetime Windows & Doors want you to be informed and confident when you select new Beaverton, OR replacement windows for your home. Of course, we hope to earn your business! For now, review this How-To Guide regarding what to look for in windows so when you do take the plunge on your next project, you are prepared!

Eco-friendly
We are a culture more concerned with being good to our environment than ever before—as we should be. And, here in Oregon, we are leading the way in environmentally sound options! You want to look for windows made with energy efficiency as the main objective. Ask us how our Simonton vinyl windows are an Earth-conscious option! Ask us about the locking mechanisms and tight seals in all our windows which support ENERGY STAR ratings for energy conservation! We are happy to share details.

Durability and functionality
If it doesn’t work smoothly or stand up against harsh weather and childlike roughness, why even bother? Further, windows should be easy to operate, lock, and unlock; not just for ease of use, but also for the rare emergency situations—your windows need to allow you to open or close quickly.

Aesthetically pleasing
In 2017, there is no reason to have ugly windows that you feel you must hide behind expensive window treatments. Further, why not choose windows that match your structure’s character, time period, and style? Our team will gladly review styles that make sense for your home.

Easy to clean
Sometimes, people forget to inquire about how to clean certain window styles and materials. The truth is, some are easier to clean than others. Especially if you live in a multi-level structure, you may want to consider the function and tilt of some window styles (like single- and double-hung, awning, or casement) which will make cleaning top-floor windows easier.

Safety—from the inside out
Safety is a hot topic in window shopping. You want to select windows with great locking mechanisms and quality glass to dissuade potential intruders. But, especially for growing young families, safety also includes the window’s functionality from the inside. Do you have young children? If so, it would it be a good idea to have locks at adult heights, away from little hands. Additionally, some window styles may not be the best idea for children’s bedrooms when you consider the possibility of pinched fingers. There is no wrong answer, but bring your concerns to the Lifetime professionals so we can help you choose the safest options for your family.

If you live in the Beaverton, OR, area or neighboring cities, give Lifetime Windows & Doors a call. We would love to discuss your next window replacement project with you!

How to Make Your Windows Safe for Kids

$

In the spring and summertime, people open their windows to let in the beautiful fresh air, but without proper protection around them, they can be dangerous and pose a falling risk. Window safety is imperative when you have little ones inside your home. Thousands of tragedies happen each year as a result of kids falling out of windows. In fact, every year in Oregon about 50 kids end up in emergency rooms after falling out of windows. Nationwide, there are over 3,300 related window falls. (1) However, falls can be prevented by making the windows safe in your home. Here are some helpful tips and suggestions.

  • Supervise your kids, keeping play areas away from windows
  • Keep windows locked when children are around
  • Keep cribs and beds away from windows to keep them away from climbing to the top and falling through an open window
  • Install windows with locking and other safety controlling devices

What type of window operating control devices are there?
We offer window operating control devices that allow for you to enjoy the fresh air, but also stay safe. Our Milgard window opening control devices meet industry standards and limit window openings to less than 4”, which can prevent unnecessary accidents and falls from happening. If you need to disengage the window control device in the event of an emergency, you can manually disengage them and open the window fully. Once the window is closed, the device will automatically reset.

Keep in mind that windows are designed not just for beauty, but for escape in case of an emergency. So, adults should be aware of what windows are in their home so they know how to easily open and close them if needed. Here are some of the basic types of windows and window locks.

Windows:
Single hung:
Bottom of window slides up to open.
Sliding: These windows slide to the side. One or both of the sides will be able to slide open
Casement: Hinged at the side, these windows can be cranked or swing open

Window Locks:
Sliding window locks:
These locks fit on the window to keep it from sliding or can mount to the side of the track to prevent sliding motion.
Folding latches: These can be installed on top of double hung windows and will allow the window to only open slightly and provide air circulation.
Window latch: These are the most common standard locks in the industry and are secured to one window, then attached to another window when it’s closed.

If the windows in your home are old and do not have proper opening control devices, or if you’re not sure if the windows in your home are secure for children, contact us today. Many new windows today have operating controlling devices that allow you to manually disengage for full operation of the window and then it will reset once the window is closed again.

If you’re interested in getting new windows that will energy efficient, quiet, and safe for children, contact our experienced team of window and door experts at Lifetime Windows & Doors.

REPLACEMENT WINDOWS: YOU NEED THE PROFESSIONALS

Do-it-yourself projects seem to have taken our country by storm. We are repurposing, repainting, rebuilding machines, thanks to HGTV and Chip and Joanna Gaines. There is something so satisfying about completing a project that brings an area of your home back to life—especially when the project turns out exactly as envisioned or better.

There are boundaries to this DIY craze, however; boundaries such as physical limitations, safety, and training. No matter how much we want to do it ourselves, sometimes hiring a professional is the best route to take. For example whole-home window replacement projects. Here at Lifetime Windows & Doors, we specialize in bringing homes back to life with new quality and beautiful windows and we do need you to be part of the process, but we want to keep you and your home safe from the repercussions which can come with DIY window projects. Let’s review, together, why hiring a Lifetime professional is the smarter option for your whole-home window replacement project:

Big projects call for the big dogs (insurance & warranties)

This is an incredible undertaking. Replacing windows in your home as a DIY project usually means you are forgoing any warranty you would otherwise be privileged to have. When you hire a Lifetime professional, your replacement windows are backed by a powerful warranty, the workmanship is backed by a powerful warranty, and should our team accidentally damage something in your home during the installation process, you are covered by our insurance.

Get the job done right the first time

Have you ever taken on a Pinterest DIY project and, upon completion, realized you missed the mark entirely? Starting all over is discouraging, isn’t it? A window replacement project is not one you want to redo.

Safety codes and regulations

A DIY replacement window project will require you to apply and obtain a permit if you plan to add a window where there isn’t current one or widen the space where you will replace. Choosing to have a professional install your windows saves you this bureaucratic hassle.

The right tools

Have you researched what tools you will need to purchase in order to remove and install windows in your home? The list is pretty extensive. Not to mention the added expenses of disposing of the old windows. Further, what will you do with these tools when and if you successfully complete the project? Hiring a professional saves you money on tools you’ll likely never have a use for again.

Efficiency makes the process feel enjoyable

The pros at Lifetime Windows & Doors are like a well-oiled machine. We are the leading provider of quality replacement windows in Beaverton, Portland, and Bend, OR areas for many reasons: we have been in this industry and served the surrounding communities since 1998, we have a carefully selected staff who have extensive experience and constant training as building performance continues to become more scientific, and we work very hard to ensure our customers get exactly what they need and want.

Remember: there needs to be boundaries around this DIY craze. Your safety and your money deserve to be protected. Call the pros at Lifetime Windows & Doors—we will have your home HGTV-ready in no time!

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES WITH MILGARD BY LIFETIME WINDOWS & DOORS

We hear the mantra all the time: Support Local Businesses! Sure, when it comes to food, we are ALL happy to oblige, are we not? Here in Beaverton, OR, we love our Pacific Northwest cuisine; there are just some things only our home state can offer/do better: Tillamook Cheese, Geoducks, hipster craft beers, all different implementations of filberts, and fresh seafood. But, “Support Local Businesses!” is not exclusively about food, or simply a faddish marketing mantra without merit. It’s good for the locals and it applies to home renovations as well!

The team at Lifetime Windows & Doors is partial to this area. After all, both owners are Oregon natives. We love to support our neighbors, friends, family, and the nearby communities!  And, we recognize the benefit in doing so. Beyond being partial, there are actually very sound reasons for communities to rally behind local businesses. Check out our (carefully researched) Top 3 Reasons to Support Locally-Owned Businesses:

  1. Keeping $$ in the local economy:
When compared to chain stores and restaurants, locally-owned businesses tend to “pay forward” or “recycle” a much more significant share of earned revenue back into the local economy.
  2. Wages and job opportunities:
Locally-owned businesses create more jobs within their communities, usually with better wages than huge chains.
  3. Local prosperity:

In our heavily regimented culture, communities which self-support have a noticeable economic advantage, such as healthier housing markets, lower unemployment, even less crime.

As we mentioned, the team here at Lifetime loves this community. So, we happily offer windows from a local manufacturer known nationwide as one of the most trusted names in windows: Milgard.
